Furneux Pelham Parish Council is a statutory consultee for all planning applications in the village. It is important to stress that the Parish Council may only make recommendations to the Local Planning Authority. The final decision on whether an application is permitted or refused rests with the Planning Officer at East Herts District Council or in certain circumstances the Development Control Committee of the District Council.

The boundaries of the village are defined in the District Council's draft District Plan and outlined on the map extracted from that Plan.

Furneux Pelham is affected by two development policies: Group 2 Villages (for area within the village boundary) and Rural Area Beyond the Green Belt (for area outside the village boundary) as defined on the map. Relevant extracts' from the draft District Plan can be seen at Villages and Rural but please note that the Villages policy is under review as described in this discussion paper.

A significant part of the Parish is not subject to the Group 2 Village polices but is instead subject to the policies for the Rural Area Beyond the Green Belt. This includes all of East End, the space between the village boundaries shown on the map, and the pallet yard.
